thought I would pass this along to anyone wanting to help. I got this today and want to share with everyone:

I can't think of a better time or opportunity for the Church to make a
difference and relieve human suffering. Much is being done by various
gov agencies to help the hurricane victims but there is so much need
that everyone is overwhelmed. I have always regretted not doing
something for the 9-11 victims and for two days I have been concerned
about how we might do something for the Katrina victims.
I have talked with Pat Franks over the last couple of days. He has
several pastor friends and church connections within 1-2 hours of New
Orleans. Some of them are alright while others seem to be in trouble. He
hasn't been able to contact a few of them. I went to Israel with some of
these people in 1997, including Jerry Cochran from Slydell, LA. The
Cochrans had fled to TX but their town in wiped out. It isn't clear how
to even begin helping them at this time.
Having said all of that, we do know that Wes Courtney, who pastors the
church Bro. McMasters pastored, is setting up a long term shelter for
New Orleans residents. His church is just over an hour from New Orleans
but enough NW of the city to have dodged the devastation seen in other
places. They are sending their church vans to the New Orleans area
tomorrow to pick up families to bring back to their Family Life Center
where they will live and eat for at least weeks, perhaps months.
Bro. McMaster's son-in-law, Jason Hanks, says that there is great need
for canned food stuff and liquids (water, gatorade, anything wet). The
stores in the area are wiped out and there is a certain amount of panick
plus this new pressure to care for the people coming into the shelter.
We are going to be sending a load of stuff to Walker, LA as soon as
possible. If you would like to help you can make donations of materials
to be taken (we will probably take a load, reassess and make at least
one more trip) or you can send financial contributions which we can
forward on to Pastor Wes and Jason in Walker. This appears to be a huge
need with long term commitments.

Feel free to petition your family, friends and co-workers to help in
this effort. Forward this email to those who might want to help. No one
should send money to us unless you know us and have confidence that your
contribution will get to its targeted destination. If you don't know us,
